Aloysius (Al) Schultz was born April 1, 1927 in Wells, Minnesota, the son of Benjamin and Julia (Stenzel) Schultz. He attended St. Casimir Catholic School in Wells. In 1944, Al was enlisted into the United States Navy and was honorably discharged in 1948. On April 10, 1951, Al was united in marriage to Mary Ann Nichols in Wells. Al worked for Berkley & Company as a supervisor for twenty-eight years until his retirement in 1991. They lived in Milford for fifty-six years before recently moving to the Highlands in Spencer. He was a member of the American Legion, Knights of Columbus, Iowa Railroad Historical Society and the North American Railcar Operators Association. Al enjoyed many varied hobbies and interests including his antique engines and threshing machines. He had a great passion for anything to do with the railroad. Through the many years he was involved with the American Hand Car Association. He enjoyed the trips he took on his handcar with this group. Al and Mary found great pleasure in taking trips all over the country on their motorcycle. Because of his love of travel, many wonderful family memories were created for his children. He was an avid pool player and won many tournaments. Not only did Al love his four children and grandchildren but he also had a great passion for animals, bringing strays home throughout the years and this too was passed onto his children. He especially enjoyed the companionship from "Buddy", his pet cockatiel, for the last twelve years. All who knew him will remember and cherish his wonderful wit and humor. Everyone can take a lesson from Al and find the humor in life. Al passed away August 5, 2011 at St. Lukes Nursing Home in Spencer, Iowa at eighty-four years of age.
