Allan Willard McClain was born July 10, 1919 in Parkston, South Dakota. His mother was Margaret Lingscheit McClain, and his father was Harvey Smith McClain. The family moved to Spirit Lake, Iowa in 1920, then Harris, Iowa in 1925. Allan attended school for one year in Spirit Lake and then completed school and graduated from Harris High School in Harris, Iowa.
He began farming as a senior in high school, and then worked at the Farmers' Elevator in Lake Park, Iowa. He started farming again in 1942. After farming for 23 years, he and his family moved into Lake Park where he owned and ran a corn shelling and trucking business for three years. He then became an Amoco (Standard Oil) bulk station manager. He retired in 1979, although he enjoyed worked for Arco Dehydrating Company during the summers.
Allan married Virginia Smith on June 26, 1941. This union was blessed with three daughters: Nancy Anne, Linda Sue, and Bonnie Lee.
Along with Virginia, Allan was a member of the United Methodist Church of Lake Park for many years. He served his church in several capacities: he was a 50-year member of the choir, served on the administrative board, was chairman of the Board of Trustees, and was Sunday School Superintendent for two years.
Allan was a member of the town council for many years, and served as mayor of Lake Park for one term. He was also a Lions Club member, serving in the offices of both president and treasurer.
