Arlene Reed

A funeral service for Arlene Reed, age 95, of Spirit Lake, will be held Monday, February 20, 2017 at 10:30 AM at United Methodist Church in Spirit Lake. Burial will be at Lakeview Cemetery. Visitation will be on Sunday, February 19, 2017 after 3:00pm with the family present from 3:00-5:00pm at Turner Jenness Funeral Home in Spirit Lake. Arlene B. Reed was born on February 7, 1922 in Jackson, Minnesota to Edward H. and Pearl Henrietta (Fisher) Grantz. In 1925 her family moved to Spirit Lake where she attended school. After graduating from high school in 1939, she moved to California. There she married Cecil Dowden Deming on June 4, 1940. After the start of World War II, she returned to Spirit Lake. On November 22, 1944, she married William A. Reed. They spent the next two years at Ft. Lauderdale Naval Air Station. They returned to Spirit Lake in January 1947. Bill first had a shoe repair shop and Arlene worked as one of the early employees of the newly founded Berkley and Company. Bill next owned the Standard Oil Station from 1950 through 1964 with Arlene serving as the bookkeeper. Bill and Arlene built and operated the Oaks Motel from 1960 to 1966. In 1966, Bill started working for Berkley and Company. In 1970, Bill and Arlene went to Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada and helped organize and manage Berkley and Company, Canada, Ltd. They returned to Spirit Lake in 1975. Arlene was active in many organizations. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, VFW Auxiliary Committee, Circle of United Methodist Women, Voluntary Action Center Committee, Lakes Regional Healthcare Volunteers (3000 hours), Twilight Chapter #59 of the Order of the Eastern Star (Worthy Matron 1985), and Ladies of the Lake Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. Arlene passed away February 15, 2017 at the Hawkeye Care Center in Milford, Iowa at ninety-five years of age. She was preceded in death by her husband, William Reed; father, Edward Grantz, mother; Pearl Henrietta Henry; step-father, James LeRoy Henry; brothers, Donald E. Grantz and Darrell D. Henry; nephew, Tom Grantz. She is survived by her two daughters, Elizabeth Lenox of Denver, CO and Deborah Reed-Margetan and her husband, Frank, of Ames, IA; brother, William Henry and his wife, Dawn, and daughter, Nicole, of Lake St. Louis, MO; niece, Diane (Grantz) Hood of Lake St. Mary, FL; three granddaughters, Laurie (Lenox) Baginski of Denver, CO, Shriver Lenox-Cucé of Harrisonburg, VA and Lisa (Lenox) Curtis of Leesburg, VA; one great-grandson, Benjamin Baginski, of Denver, CO.
