A funeral service for Arlys Miller, age 61, of Spencer, will be held Tuesday, January 5, 2016 at 1:00pm at Union Memorial Church in Milford. Burial will be at Milford Cemetery. Visitation will be on Monday, January 4th from 5:00-7:00pm at Turner Jenness Funeral Home in Milford. Arlys Kay Miller was born in Storm Lake, Iowa on June 13, 1954 to Don and Verla Maschino and passed away December 27, 2015 after a short battle of cancer. Arlys attended elementary school in Sibley, Iowa and graduated in 1972 from high school in Shenandoah, Iowa. She then attended Northwest Missouri State University from 1972-1974. On April 23, 1977, Arlys married Steven Miller of Milford, Iowa. They lived on Steve's family farm from 1978-2002 at which time they built a home in Spencer. Their daughter, Angela Marie was born March 1, 1979. Arlys worked as a telephone operator for Northwestern Bell Telephone Co. - beginning in Shenandoah in 1974 and transferred to the Spencer office where she also worked in repair service until 1982. From 1982-1994, she worked at the Clay County FSA office. Beginning in 1994 until June 2015, Arlys worked as office manager at Midwest Land Management in Spencer. She took great pride in her detailed work and enjoyed very much working with her friends, supervisors and many clients she came to know well from FSA and at Midwest Land. Arlys and Steve are active members of the Union Memorial Church in Milford. She kept busy singing in the choir, singing solos and for a short time directed the hand bell choir. Arlys was also an active member of the Kiwanis After 5 Club. She and Steve seldom missed the annual trek to Deadwood, South Dakota with friends to hike Crazy Horse. She enjoyed playing golf with friends, riding bikes with Steve and their grandchildren, and looked forward to her weekly yoga/Pilates class at the Spencer YMCA. Every year Arlys looked forward to the Clay County Fair and early morning Black Friday shopping with her daughter, Angie and her sister, Deb. Spending time with her grandchildren during their summer visits and traveling to Des Moines to see them were always special times for her and Steve. Arlys was very attentive to the care of - and made nearly daily visits to- her dad, Don Maschino, who still resides in Longhouse-Northshire in Spencer. She played a huge role in the care of her mother, Verla, who died of ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease) in January 2001. Arlys is survived by her husband of thirty-eight years, Steve; her daughter, Angie Williams (Russ); grandchildren, Sebastian, Roby, Skylyn and Brexton all of Des Moines. Additionally, her father, Don Maschino; his wife, Bev and sisters, Kathy Lieberman (Gary) of Tempe, Arizona and Deb Schaefer (Gary) of Columbus, Nebraska. She has a large extended family throughout Iowa, Nebraska and South Dakota.
