Art was born in Valley Washington. His mother died shortly after his birth, and he traveled to Minnesota in the company of an older brother when he was six weeks of age. There he resided with and aunt and uncle - Fred and Jane Tyre in Minnesota township, Jackson County.
In 1932 he married Margaret Norton and spent the majority of his early life farming in Jackson County. Two children were born of this union, Patricia, who preceded him in death and David, who survives him. Art and Margaret spent 64 years together in marriage until she preceded him in death in 1996.
Art was a man of many talents. He enjoyed singing in a quartet, was an excellent Sunday school teacher, both in his early years in Minnesota and in his retirement years in Texas. He was a talented auctioneer, plying that trade in the sales barn in Jackson for many years. A man of great wit and humor, he spent many hours regaling his children and grandchildren, as well as his health care workers in the nursing home where he spent his last years, with his litany of poems and stories. In his retirement years he became an avid and competitive shuffle board player, adding several cups and plaques attesting to his competitive skill. Art had a varied work career after leaving the farm in the early 1950's. He owned an insurance agency in Storm Lake Iowa, worked on the grounds and was a tour boat captain in the American Baptist assembly grounds in Green Lake WI., and spent several years employed by the American Baptists in a nursing home in Aurora, Co. After retiring to Texas in the winter and St, Croix Falls in the summer, Art was a valued volunteer for several years in the nursing home in St. Croix Falls, WI where he spent his last years and where he resided at his death.
Art is survived by one son, David, eight grandchildren, Kathy Wochomurka, David, (wife Julie); Heidi Keil, (husband Brad); Shellie; Perry, (wife Nancy); Troy, (wife Pam) Teri, (husband Todd); and Heather, (husband Garret), twenty three great grandchildren, and four great, great, grandchildren.
