Burl Place

Burl Romaine Place was born September 15, 1917 in Scranton, Iowa, the son of Clyde and Laura Place. Bus was raised and educated in Scranton, graduating from Scranton High School in 1935. On May 6, 1940, Burl was united in marriage to Ruth Reinhart at St. Paul Rectory in Scranton. The couple made their home in Scranton, while Bus worked construction for many defense projects. In March of 1942, he enlisted in the Army Air Corps. and received his Wingers and Officer status in 1944. Bus was a B29 Pilot, serving in the Pacific Theatre of Operations during WWII until receiving an Honorable Discharge in 1946. Upon returning from his service, Burl and his brother, LeRoy formed Place Brothers. In 1955 he incorporated Mining Co. 1955 and P&M Stone Co. Inc. In 1957 he moved to Humboldt, Iowa where he served on many boards for professional, church and local organizations at a local, state and national level. Burl enjoyed spending time with family at the lake, golfing and hunting as well as spending time at his homes in Okoboji, and Mesa, Arizona. One memorable honor he had was being chosen C.Y.O. Citizen of the Year. Bus passed away on September 9, 2013 at Hilltop Care Center in Spirit Lake at ninety-five years of age. Surviving Burl are his wife Bobbee; daughter, Linda Fedora (Richard) of Florida, son, Gary Place (Teresa) of Spirit Lake and Bobbee's daughter, Catherine Ferrari (Denis) of Georgia. He is also survived by six grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, five step-grandchildren and seven step-great-grandchildren. Burl was preceded in death by his first wife, Ruth and his son Larry. The family requested that memorials be given to Opportunity Village (1200 N 9th St. West, Clear Lake, Iowa 50428).
