Clarence M. Call

Funeral services for Clarence M. Call, 92, of Spirit Lake will be 10:30 am Monday, February 8, 2016, at Turner Jenness Funeral Home in Spirit Lake. Interment will be at Lakeview Cemetery in Spirit Lake. Visitation will begin at 9:30 am, Monday until service time at the funeral home. Clarence Martin Call was born on August 16, 1923, the eldest of eight children, to Alva and Thelma (Strait) Call near Ava, Missouri. After graduating from high school in 1941, he moved to northwest Kansas to work as a ranch hand near Grinnell. He enlisted in the Marines in 1944 and served in Occupied Japan until 1946. Clarence attended college at Kansas State University from 1949 to 1953, majoring in soil conservation. Clarence married Jane Snyder on December 27, 1955 and lived in Almena, Kansas where he worked as a banker. After having four children, they moved to David City, Nebraska, then to the Iowa City area before settling in Spirit Lake in 1970 where Clarence was the District Soil Conservationist for Dickinson County, retiring in 1990. Clarence was an avid gardener. He also had apple trees and made delicious apple sauce. He was a sports enthusiast, especially watching Kansas State football and basketball. He was a member of the United Church of God and enjoyed church activities and reading the Bible. He was a colorful story-teller and really enjoyed kidding around with family and friends. Clarence passed away February 3, 2016 at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls, South Dakota at ninety-two years of age. Survivors include his children, Christine (Greg) Thompson of Spirit Lake, John (Brenda) Call of Luverne, Minnesota and David (Donna) Call of Spencer; grandchildren, Jennifer (Dean) Aakhus, Lisa (Micah) Feser, Amber (Brad) Cooke, Ashley Call and Anna Coffin; great-grandchildren, Tiana Murray, Jameson Feser, Madison and Nora Aakhus and Julianne, Jayda, Jennalee, and Jacilynn Cooke; siblings, Phyllis (Ed) Robertson and Troy (Hazel) Call; and many beloved nieces and nephews. Clarence was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Jane; daughter, Elizabeth; granddaughter, Melanie; siblings, Mary, Vera, Cecil, Dorothy, Loren and Ralph.
