Clarence Halbur

February 28, 1926 — January 4, 2014

A funeral service will be held Friday, January 10, 2014 at 10:30am at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Milford. Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be on Thursday, January 9th after 4:00pm at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Milford. There will be a Knight of Columbus Rosary at 6:00pm with a Parish Scripture Service immediately to follow. Clarence John Halbur, the son of Anna (Graf) and John Halbur, was born February 28, 1926 in Iona, Minnesota. After completing the 7th grade, Clarence worked at a golf course as a caddy. He then worked on the farm for Hiriam Trebbein and later for Les and Irene McDonald. At the age of 19, he was sworn into the United States Army on the day that the World War II ended. He was stationed in Korea until his honorable discharge in 1947. On May 20, 1948, Clarence was united in marriage to Lenora (Jo) Lowry at the St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Milford, Iowa. Clarence worked for several different farmers in the area until he started farming on his own. Clarence and Jo farmed for about twenty years and during part of that time they raised dogs, mainly German Shepherds. After he stopped farming, he went to work as a custodian for Milford Community School for eleven years, retiring as head custodian. Clarence passed away Saturday, January 4, 2014 at the Veteran Hospital in Sioux Falls, South Dakota at eighty-seven years of age. He is survived by his children, John (Loretta) Halbur of Milford, Carol (Tim) Kester of Clearwater, Nebraska, Gerald (Ann) Halbur of Hilliard, Florida, Richard Halbur of Hinesville, Georgia, Earl (Tinna) Halbur of Hartley, Iowa and Florence Taplin of San Antonia, Texas; twenty-six grandchildren; fifty-three great-grandchildren; twenty-two great-great-grandchildren; sister, Marian (LeRoy) Knoll of Hutchinson, Minnesota and sister-in-law, Karen Halbur of Arnolds Park, Iowa. Clarence was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Jo; son, James; brothers, Elmer and Leo; sisters, Alma Shatto and Cecilia Muellerleile; grandson, Steffan Taplin; great-granddaughter, Chloe Kester; daughter-in-law, Yvonne Halbur.
