Don Leslie Schroeder, son of Donald and June (Rowe) Schroeder, was born March 4, 1948, in Estherville, Iowa. The family moved to Sioux Valley, Minnesota when Don was young, and he attended school through 8th grade there. The family then moved to a farm near Lake Park, Iowa. Don helped work on the farm and played football in high school. He graduated from Harris-Excelsior-Lake Park High School with the Class of 1966.

Upon graduation Don entered the United States Air Force. He served his country during the Vietnam War, then was stationed in Germany for three years, attaining the rank of Sergeant. He was honorably discharged in 1971.

Don met Debbie Becker in Estherville, Iowa that December, and the two were united in marriage April 14, 1972, in Sherburn, Minnesota. The couple moved around a few times before finally settling in Lake Park in 1976. Don worked at Crystal Tips in Spirit Lake, then Eaton in Spencer. He was a member of the Lake Park American Legion.

Don enjoyed spending time with his family. He was very supportive of his grandkids. He played checkers with them, and in return, they taught him how to fish. Don even spoiled their dogs by making them bacon and eggs for breakfast each morning. He was a coin collector. He liked to explore new places and learn new things. Don was always reading something, from the encyclopedia to the Bible to informational articles. He also liked to give advice! Don was quite a handyman, doing carpentry and building several additions to their home. He also took pleasure in doing mechanical work on tractors.
