Doris Garms

Mrs. Doris Garms, 91, of Spirit Lake passed away Friday, September 6, 2013 at Hilltop Care Center in Spirit Lake. Services will be 10:30 am Monday, September 9, 2013 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Spirit Lake. Interment will be at Riverside Cemetery in Spencer. Visitation will be Sunday, September 8, 2013 after 3 pm with the family present from 3-5 pm at Turner Jenness Funeral Home in Spirit Lake. Doris Elaine Garms was born February 20, 1922 to Oscar and Marie (Jebsen) Kopp near Sutherland, Iowa. She graduated from Sutherland High School. On June 8, 1941 at Royal, Iowa, Doris married Harold Schoelerman. He died in World War II, she returned to live in Hartley. Doris married John Garms on December 27, 1948 at Hartley, Iowa. They made their home in rural Royal, where they farmed. Upon retirement in 1987, they moved to Spencer. Doris moved to Spirit Lake in 2004. Over the course of their life together, Doris enjoyed times with family, baking wedding cakes, dancing, and serving the Lord. Doris was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church where she was a member of LWML. Doris passed away Friday, September 6, 2013 at Hilltop Care Center at ninety-one years of age. Doris is survived by four children and their spouses: Nancy (Ron) Bauman of Molokai, Hawaii; Dean (Martha) Garms of Cedar Falls, Iowa; Carol (Roger) Brevik of Spirit Lake; and Janelle (Rick) Miller, of Spirit Lake; eleven grandchildren, two step-grandchildren, ten great grandchildren, six step-great grandchildren, brother Marvin (Verna) Kopp of Hoyt Lakes, Minnesota; sister Lorene Espey of Sutherland, Iowa, brother-in-law Arlan Clausen of Spencer, Iowa; and sisters-in-law Frieda Garms of Andover, Minnesota and Shirley (Marion) Roghair of Spencer, Iowa; nieces, nephews and other family and friends. Doris was preceded in death by her parents, husbands Harold Schoelerman and John Garms, and sister Mildred Meyer.
