Dwain Olson

February 13, 1924 — November 2, 2011

Dwain Vernon (Ole) Olson was born February 13, 1924, in Alcester, South Dakota, the son of Myrtle and Cecil Olson. He starred in basketball at Alcester High School - where the team won the state championship in 1941. Following his graduation in 1942, he enrolled at the University of South Dakota until he entered the U.S. Marine Corp in April of 1943. He participated in major campaigns in the South Pacific during World War II. Dwain was a life-long member of the Lutheran Church and had a favorite seat at Immanuel Lutheran in Spirit Lake. After his discharge in l946, he graduated from the school of business in Sioux City and then married Donna Beyer of Alcester in 1948. Donna and Ole made Spirit Lake their home in 1954 where Ole owned and operated Olson's Grocery for a number of years until it closed. He stayed in the grocery business afterwards, working at HyVee. After retirement, he and Donna traveled extensively, finding California to be their favorite! He also enjoyed helping his wife Donna at their Spirit Lake business, Picture Perfect. Always the patriot, Ole could be found displaying the US Flag. A humble, friendly man who loved people, he was widely known and respected. He was an honorable man and a true gentleman. Most importantly, he lived a life that reflected his faith. Dwain will be forever remembered by his loving wife of 63 years, Donna; his children, Melodee Fassero (Donn); Kim Norman; Heidi Clarity (Kevin); Brad Olson (Laurie); Dr. Brett Olson; Stacy Williams (Mike); 11 grandchildren and Samantha in Heaven; 1 great-grandchild; his sister Avis; many nieces, nephews and countless friends. Dwain lost his valiant battle with lung cancer and passed away peacefully at Dickinson County Memorial Hospital on November, 2, 2011 surrounded by his family. Ole had a full life on earth, but to be in the presence of his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, is the very best of all!
