Ed McClurg

November 20, 1936 — December 30, 2008

Edward Carlyle McClurg was born November 20, 1936 in Spirit Lake, Iowa, the son of Duard and Evelyn (Kuhn) McClurg. He graduated from Spirit Lake High School and attended Iowa State University for one year. He received his Associate's Degree from Iowa Lakes Community College and a Bachelor's Degree from Mankato State. Ed served four years in the Air Force being stationed overseas in Japan, Korea and at Ellsworth Airforce Base in South Dakota. On October 14, 1961, he was united in marriage to Karen (Moritz) in Milford, Iowa. He farmed for a time before working at Berkley & Co. as an import/export manager. After retirement, he worked at Fergusons Landscaping. Ed lived on a century farm owned by the family for over 127 years. Ed was involved in many community organizations including, board member and vice president of Dickinson County Museum, trustee of Spirit Lake and Lakeville Townships, twenty-three years as secretary/treasurer of Spirit Lake Fire Department, 4-H leader for Lakeville Braves, Isaac Walton League, Pheasants Forever, Garden Club, helped with the ASCS office and was an active member of St. Mary's Catholic Church. He enjoyed antique collecting, genealogy, gardening and spending time with his family. Ed passed away on December 30, 2008 at his home in Spirit Lake, Iowa at seventy-two years of age. He is survived by his four children, Melissa (McClurg) Sebastian and her husband, Kevin of Everly, IA, Dan McClurg and his wife, Katie of Clear Lake, IA, Susan (McClurg) Lynn and her husband, Todd of Spirit Lake, IA and Sandra McClurg of Estherville, IA; ten grandchildren, Ashley, Michael S., Danial, Michael, Kelli, Brittany, Erin, Tyler, Megan and Nick; one great-grandson, Bryce; sisters, Karen Sangl and her husband, Lonney of Wapheton, IA and Mary McClurg of Spirit Lake; brothers-in-law, Bob Moritz and his wife, Kathryn of Minnesota and Lynn Moritz and his wife, Darlene of Milford; many nieces, nephews and cousins. Ed was preceded in death by his parents, Duard and Evelyn McClurg and his wife, Karen McClurg.
