Glenn E. Hemphill was born April 16, 1917 in Milford, Iowa the son of Frank and Maryetta (Warburton) Hemphill. He was raised and educated in Milford, graduating from Milford High School.
Glenn entered the US Army on July 17, 1942. He served with the 95th Division, 377th Infantry under General Patton. He was awarded the Bronze Star as well as a battlefield commission while in the European Theatre. He received an Honorable Discharge in June, 1945.
Glenn was united in marriage to Lorelie Vernice Pohlman on September 1, 1940 in Lakefield, Minnesota (57 years). Upon his returning from the US Army, the couple made their home in Milford, where they raised their children. He worked as a fuel tank driver for CD Farm Service for over thirty years. In retirement, Glenn worked and golfed at Woodlyn Hills Golf Course.
He was a member of First Lutheran Church in West Okoboji. He was a longtime elected Trustee on the Iowa Great Lakes Sanitation District from 1953 - 1996. He was also a member of the Milford American Legion, and a volunteer fireman. Glenn loved to golf. He was an avid sports fan, and enjoyed traveling and fishing.
Glenn passed away Tuesday, July 29, 2008 at Lakes Regional Healthcare in Spirit Lake at ninety-one years of age.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Lorelie Vernice Hemphill, his parents, Frank and Maryetta Hemphill, brothers, Dwight and Bill Hemphill.
Left to survive are his daughters, Glenda Enderson (Darvin) of Urbandale, Iowa, Mary Lorenzen of Prior Lake, Minnesota, and Jane Schwensohn (Carl) of Minneapolis, Minnesota; brothers, Bob Hemphill (Alice) of Odebolt, Iowa and Keith Hemphill of Milford; sisters-in-law, Doris Hemphill and JoAnn Baker. Also surviving are ten grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren, many nieces and nephews and friends.
