A funeral service will be held Thursday, May 8, 2014 at 10:00am at Turner Jenness Funeral Home in Spirit Lake. Visitation will be on Wednesday, May 7th from 5:00-7:00pm at Turner Jenness Funeral Home in Spirit Lake.
Harold Roy Henderson was born December 7th 1928 to George and Emma Henderson at Lake Park, Iowa. After graduating from Lake Park High School and bowling a few frames he joined the United States Army in 1951 where he served as a clerk in the Korean Conflict.
In 1953 he met and later married Lucille Pearl Shipley. They made their home in the lakes area and were the parents to four children; Becky (husband Wes) Groff, Ken Henderson, Kim (husband Kurt) Sailer and Sandy Riley. Harold has three living grand children, Shawna Groff, Cole Groff and Reece Riley.
After retiring from Chrystal Tips Harold enjoyed gardening, growing flowers, making his famous Angel Food cakes and Farmer's Market. Harold was a member of VFW Post 4514 for many years. He proudly served as post commander, district commander and Service Officer. He was dedicated to the causes and the community supported by both the VFW and the American Legion. It was highlight and an honor for him when he was selected to be Grand Marshall of the 2010 Memorial Day Parade.
Harold passed away on Friday, May 2rd at the Veterans Hospital in Sioux Falls at the age of 85. He will be missed by his children and grandchildren as well as his siblings; Don Henderson, George Henderson, Lila Henderson, Luella Anderson and a multitude of friends and family members. Harold knew no stranger.
Harold was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Lucille in 2000, his companion Jean Beard in 2011, Granddaughter Mattie Groff in 1984, and his daughter in law Peg Henderson on January 16th 2014.
