A funeral service for Helen K. (Gibson) Hewitt, will be held Monday, August 27, 2018 at 2:00pm at First Lutheran Church in West Okoboji. Burial will be at Lakeview Gardens Cemetery. Visitation will be on Sunday, August 26 from 3:00-5:00pm at First Lutheran Church. Helen K. Hewitt, the first child of Hans and Cora Kuinsland, was born March 21, 1922 in Milford, Iowa. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran Church. She graduated from the Milford School in 1940 and later graduated from the Hamilton Business College in Mason City. Right after college, she worked for a U.S. District Attorney and later for the Iowa Insurance Company in Mason City. Helen then moved to Ames, Iowa and became the secretary to the CEO of Brick and Tile Conglomerate. On August 15, 1945, Helen met and married a navy man named, James Gibson. They had two sons, Steven James Gibson and Eric Joe Gibson and one daughter, Barbara Darleen, who died five days after birth. In 1985, Helen married William R. Hewitt. They enjoyed traveling together by camper all over the United States. They built a home in Texas where they lived until returning to Iowa. Bill passed away in 2001. Helen was a member of the Okoboji City Council from 1974-1986 and served on the Board of Nursing Home in Milford, N.W. Iowa Municipality Board, Iowa Bankers Association and volunteered as a Pink Lady at the Dickinson County Memorial Hospital. She was a sixty year member of Eastern Star, a member of the Arpoki Club and USO. Helen passed away August 23, 2018 at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls, South Dakota at ninety-six years of age. She is survived by her son, Steven (Jane) Gibson; daughter-in-law, Cindy Gibson; grandsons, Brian (Trina), Bradley (Jeri), and Brandon; great-granddaughter, Mallory; great-grandson, Eric C. Gibson; and longtime friend, Marilyn Strickland. Helen always thought of Marilyn and Cindy as her daughters. Helen was preceded in death by her husband, James Gibson; second husband, William Hewitt; daughter, Barbara Gibson and son, Eric Gibson.
