Herb Benit was born October 12, 1913 at Ireton, Iowa to Carsten Peter Benit and Gasa Meyer Benit. After high school, he graduated from Coynes Electrical Trade School in Chicago.
On May 16, 1936 he was married to Alice Ada Tomford at Sioux Falls, South Dakota. They made their home in the lakes area their entire married life. Herb was Production Manager for Iowa Electric , now known as Alliant Energy.
He was a member of the United Methodist Church of Spirit Lake.
Herb was a creative person and craftsman, building furniture, stained glass creations, and wood carvings. He also enjoyed fishing, golf, computers and coffee with his friends.
Herb died November 14, 2008 at Rosewood Manor in Estherville.
He is survived by his wife, Alice; daughter, Patricia Benit of Portland, Oregon; son, Brad Benit and daughter-in law, Marci of Spirit Lake; grandchildren, Richard O'Lear, Lynelle Hinck, Sara Butler and Kelly Ogelsby; great grandchildren, Ashley O'Lear, David Koellerer, Wyatt and Alayna Hinck and Ryan and Bailey Butler; sister, Anita and her husband, Irving Bockman and nephew, Gordon and his wife Bette, Benit.
Herb was preceded in death by his parents, three brother, Lou, Eldo, and Elmer Benit and two sisters, Minnie Linda.
