James Streit

James Streit, 83, of Milford, passed away February 23, 2013 at his home in Milford, Iowa. Visitation will begin after 3 pm Tuesday, February 26, 2013 with the family present from 5 - 7 pm. There will be a Knights of Columbus service at 6:30pm followed by a Parish Scripture Service at Turner Jenness Funeral Home on Tuesday. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 am Wednesday, February 27, 2013 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Milford. Interment will be at Calvary Cemetery in Milford. James Louis Streit, son of Anthony and Mary (Staudacher) Streit, was born on April 11, 1929 in Ashton, Iowa. Jim graduated from St. Joseph High School in Ashton and completed Barber School in Sioux City, Iowa. On April 18, 1950, Jim was united in marriage to Phyllis Jean Thiele in Ashton. Jim worked as a barber for ten years before working as a rural mail carrier for the U.S. Postal Service. They made their home in Sheldon, Charles City, Spirit Lake and after retiring from the Postal Service in 1991, they moved to Milford, Iowa. Jim was a member of the St. Joseph Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus. In his younger years, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, trapping along with playing high school basketball, as he was known as "Cutie #3". After marrying his high school sweetheart, Phyllis, they enjoyed many nights of dancing while listening to their son play in a band…after all, he was known as the booking agent for Steve. He was proud of being awarded the "Chief Pie Maker" in 2003 with the K.C.'s. Above all, he had a deep love for his faith, family, friends, his 2 adorable granddaughters and his many 4-legged great-grandkids. Jim had a great sense of humor and was never lacking a joke. Did we mention he hated green beans? Jim passed away Saturday, February 23, 2013 at his home in Milford, Iowa at eighty-three years of age. He is survived by his son, Steve (Jerilyn) Streit of Milford; granddaughter, Amy Streit of Armstrong, Iowa and Anne Schwieger of Lake Park, Iowa; sister, Kathleen Richter of Sioux Falls, South Dakota and Betty DeWall of Omaha, Nebraska; brother, Donald (Marg) Streit of Spirit Lake, Iowa, Anthony (Mary) Streit of Fort Collins, Colorado and Lenard (Luella) Streit of Sibley, Iowa; sister-in-law, Barbara Streit of Stacyville, Iowa; sister-in-law, Zita Thiele of Sibley, Iowa. He was preceded in death by his wife, Phyllis; one sister, Marian Sheforgen and two brothers, Paul and Bob Streit.
