Jerome Francis Hentges was born October 1, 1951 in Waterloo, Iowa, the son of Francis Jerome Hentges and Myrna Mae Costigan. He attended St. Mary's Catholic Grade School in New Hampton and graduated in 1969 from New Hampton Community High School. Jerry attended Ellsworth Community College and then graduated from the University of Northern Iowa in 1976 with a teaching degree. He received his Masters Degree in Counseling from Drake University in 1991.
On June 15, 1974, Jerry was united in marriage to Paula Sue Anderson in New Hampton, Iowa. The family lived in Holton, Kansas, Lake Mills, Iowa, and Lake Park, Iowa where he taught and coached. The family then moved to Spirit Lake, Iowa in 1991.
Jerry worked as the Spirit Lake Middle School Guidance Counselor and Athletic Director. He was head wrestling coach for Lake Park and Spirit Lake for many years followed by several years of refereeing including the Iowa State Wrestling Tournament. He also coached in the middle school and was a Drivers-Education instructor.
Jerry enjoyed pheasant hunting with his German Shorthair, Annie, pontoon riding with his family, fishing, riding his Harley and trips to South Dakota.
