John Junior Harmelink, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully on December 28, 2024, at the age of 96.

Born on October 19, 1928, at home near Newkirk, Iowa, John was the youngest of nine children born to John and Kate (De Jong) Harmelink. Growing up on the farm, he worked tirelessly alongside his family raising pigs, cows, chickens, ducks, geese, and crops including corn, soybeans, oats, and alfalfa. His childhood and early years were shaped by the values of hard work, responsibility, and family- principles that stayed with him throughout his life.

John graduated from Newkirk High School in 1946, after which he began his lifelong career in farming. His commitment to agriculture was unwavering, and he spent the majority of his early life cultivating the land and raising animals. In 1980, John transitioned from farming to new opportunities and moved to Spirit Lake, Iowa. There, he worked with Osceola Rural Water and later enjoyed mowing fairways at multiple golf courses until his retirement in 2015 at the age of 87. Even after retiring, John's entrepreneurial spirit led him to the world of eBay, where he spent his later years selling items online-finding joy in both the work and the connections it fostered.

John's life took a significant turn when he met the love of his life, Beverly Dominick of Le Mars, Iowa. Their fateful meeting came on a winter's night at the Eagles Club in Le Mars, where Beverly famously slid down the banister, catching John's attention. They married on November 27, 1953, and together they raised four sons. Their 71 year marriage was a true testament to enduring love, and countless memories and adventures.

A proud American, John served in the U.S. Army from April 13, 1951 to April 13, 1953, where he was stationed in Korea and served in combat on the frontlines during the Korean War. His military service was an experience that shaped his character and reinforced his sense of duty and patriotism.

John's passions were many- fishing, woodworking, and spending time with family and friends. He was also an avid traveler, wintering in Nevada and Arizona for many years. He was deeply involved in his faith, first as a member of the First Reformed Church in Newkirk and later the First Presbyterian Church of Spirit Lake.

John was known for his warm heart, sense of humor, and his ability to make everyone feel at home. He was a constant source of support and inspiration to his four sons: David of Fairmont, Minnesota, Daniel of Henderson, Iowa, Douglas of Prior Lake, Minnesota, and John Harmelink of Spirit Lake, Iowa, and his wife, Deb. He was also a loving grandfather to 10 grandchildren and a great-grandfather to 13 great-grandchildren. His legacy will continue through the generations who were touched by his love and wisdom.

John was preceded in death by his parents, 3 brothers, 5 sisters and several in-laws. He is survived by his wife, sons, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and a host of extended family and friends who will miss him dearly.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the First Presbyterian Church of Spirit Lake (3501 Hill Ave Spirit Lake, IA 51360) or a charity of your choice.

Rest in peace, John. You will forever be remembered for the love you gave, the lessons you taught, and the legacy you leave behind.
