John L. Roghair, son of Jake and Mary (Rozeboom) Roghair, was born March 11, 1926 in Maurice, Iowa. His childhood years were spent near Sanborn, Iowa, before they moved to Hartley. John worked very hard helping his dad with farm work. They had row crops, cattle, hogs, cows and chickens. For many years John did custom bailing. John was united in marriage to Lois Riemersma on December 27, 1950 in Hospers, Iowa. The couple made their home near Hartley, Iowa where they were engaged in farming. Seven years later, they moved near Melvin, Iowa and continued farming until they retired. Lois taught school for thirty-two years in Hartley, Sanborn and Sheldon. The couple enjoyed their cottage on Big Spirit Lake for thirty-five years. John enjoyed fishing and photography. John was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Spirit Lake, Iowa. He did a lot of volunteering work while they were building the new church, which he enjoyed very much. He was also active on the church board, and was a greeter and usher for several years. Mr. Roghair passed away at his cottage on May 29, 2008 at eighty-two years of age. He was preceded in death by his parents and an infant brother, Jacob. He is survived by his wife, Lois; brothers, Marion and Shirley Roghair of Spencer, Bill and Shirley Roghair of Mountain Lake, Minnesota, Glen and Janice Roghair of Spencer and Ronald and Sharon Roghair of Spencer; other relatives and friends.
