A visitation for Joyce Klenken, age 93, of Spirit Lake, will be held from 3-6 pm on Sunday, January 3, 2021, at Turner Jenness Funeral Home in Spirit Lake. Due to current health concerns, the family will not be present during this time. There will be a private family service held at 10:30 am on Monday, January 4. Joyce Mildred Klenken was born on December 1, 1927, to Albert and Emma (Bauer) Wegner in Lakefield, Minnesota. She attended Lutheran parochial school in Lakefield until the 8th grade and graduated from the public high school in 1946.
On November 13, 1954, Joyce married Alfred Klenken in Lakefield. They lived in Blue Earth, Minnesota and Pocahontas, Iowa before moving to Spirit Lake in 1960 where Joyce and Al started a dry cleaning business. After Al died in 1979, Joyce took a position with Campus Cleaners at the Great Lakes Mall where Joyce managed the store and did alterations. After she retired in 2001, she sewed for her customers out of her home for several years.
Joyce loved to attend the dances at the Roof Garden in Arnolds Park and the Fox Lake Ballroom. Joyce and Al traveled all over to dances and loved to Jitter Bug. She was also an avid bowler, bowling two nights a week for forty years and traveled all over the U.S. with the Women's National Tournament for twenty years. Joyce was an active member of the Spirit Lake Kiwanis, volunteered many hours as a Pink Lady at the hospital and a long time active member of the VFW Auxiliary in Spirit Lake. Joyce was a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church serving in many roles.
Joyce passed away December 31, 2020 at Accura Healthcare in Spirit Lake, Iowa at ninety-three years of age.
She is survived by her daughter, Emmy Lou Hiler (Lonny) of Prescott Valley, Arizona; son, Bruce Klenken (Susan) of Spencer, Iowa; grandchildren, Nathen Hiler (Amanda) and Nichole Lavers (Prescott) of Prescott Valley, Arizona, Allison Klenken (fiancé, Andrew Houchin) of Ankeny, Iowa and Jennifer Klenken (fiancé, Adam Johnson) of Kansas City, Missouri; three great-grandchildren, Raegan, Lincoln and Emma Grace; sister-in-law, Alice Wegner of Urbandale, Iowa; and many nieces and nephews.
Joyce was preceded in death by her parents, Albert and Emma Wegner; husband, Al Klenken; brothers, Harlan Wegner, Mervin Wegner, Delbert Wegner, Leo Wegner, Luther Wegner; sister, Gladys Christensen.
