Larry LeRoy Staines

A memorial visitation for Larry Staines, age 73, will be held Friday, July 24, 2015 from 1:00-4:00pm with a brief service at 2:00pm at Turner Jenness Funeral Home in Spirit Lake. Memorials will be donated to the Mayo Clinic Research for Alzheimer's. Larry LeRoy Staines, the son of Paul and Mildred (Kruckenberg) Staines, was born on October 3, 1941, in Sibley, Iowa. Larry graduated from Hartley High School in 1960 and graduated from Morningside College in 1965. Following college, Larry began working for Hormel foods in Austin, MN, where he met Jeanine Johannsen. Larry and Jeanine were married on October 15, 1966 in Hartland, MN. Following their marriage, Larry and Jeanine lived in Fremont, NE, Atlantic, IA, Arlington, NE and Audubon, IA while working 37 years for Hormel Foods as a hog buyer. Larry retired in 2002 and moved with Jeanine to Arnolds Park, IA. Growing up, Larry was a member of the Hartley United Methodist Church where he was active in MYF. While living in Audubon, he was a member of the Audubon United Methodist Church, was treasurer and leader of trap league for Izaak Walton League, enjoyed bowling league, hunting (especially bow hunting for deer), RC model airplane club, his 1931 Ford Model A and canoeing on Iowa rivers. Larry especially enjoyed boating and skiing on Lake Okoboji and his snowmobile trips to Canada, Black Hills, Yellowstone, Big Horn Mountains, Wisconsin, and Minnesota. Larry also enjoyed vacations with friends in Hawaii & Texas, with family in Florida & South Dakota, and fishing in Canada. Larry passed away at Mercy Hospice in Johnston, Iowa on Friday, July 17, 2015 at the age of 73. He was preceded in death by his parents; mother & father-in-law, William and Beverly Johannsen, Sr.; brothers-in-law, William Johannsen, Jr. and Jerry Johannsen ; sister-in-law, Julie Supalla. He is survived by his wife, Jeanine of Arnolds Park, IA; son, Doug (Jennifer) Staines of Waverly, IA; daughter, Michelle (Joe) Wanninger of Ankeny, IA; grandchildren: Katie, Nicole & Jacob Staines of Waverly, IA, Annie, Lily Marie, Sarah, & Emily Wanninger of Ankeny, IA; brother, Jay (Nancy) Staines of Okoboji, IA; brothers-in-law, Warren (Linda) Johannsen of Twin Lakes, MN, Dale (Dixie) Johannsen of Freeborn, MN; sister-in-law, Jill Witter of Albert Lea, MN; and many other relatives and friends.
