A Celebration of Life for Mardi Jo Currier Matthews, age 83, of Spencer will be held privately at a later date.
Mardi Jo Currier Matthews, a beloved daughter, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend, departed this world on April 12, 2024. She was born on January 27, 1941, in Emmetsburg, Iowa, to Gilbert and Lois Currier.
Throughout her life, Mardi lived in Spirit Lake, Spencer, and Bemidji, Minnesota, settling in Spencer for the last 17 years of her life.
Mardi dedicated 35 years as a dance teacher before pursuing higher education at Bemidji University, earning her degree and embarking on a new chapter in Mental Health Counseling. Throughout her career, she touched the lives of many with her empathy, wisdom, and compassion.
As a Christian, Mardi’s faith provided strength and guidance throughout her life. She found joy in the simple pleasures of the outdoors, the tranquility of the lake, and embarking on adventures while traveling. She took comfort in writing and speaking her mind but Mardi's greatest joy was found in the company of her cherished family and friends.
Those left to cherish her memory include her children: Rich (Angie) Kendall of Round Rock, Texas; Teresa Garcia of Marion, Iowa; Stacy (Tom) Wells of Milford, Iowa; Amy (Keith) Strohman of Spencer, Iowa; Sarah Matthews of Spencer, Iowa; and Jesse Matthews (Marie Adams) of Laporte, Minnesota; 12 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, extended family and friends.
Mardi was preceded in death by her parents, Gib and Lois Currier, her brothers, Lee and Bob Currier, her granddaughter, Courtney Wells, her grandson, Brian Kendall, and her faithful companion, Murphy, the cherished springer spaniel.
