Mrs. Margaret Cravens, 91, of Spirit Lake, passed away Friday, March 15, 2015, at Lakes Regional Healthcare in Spirit Lake.
Service: 10 am, Tuesday, March 19, 2013 at St. Albans Episcopal Church in Spirit Lake
Visitation: after 3 pm, Monday, March 18, 2013 with the family present from 5 - 7 pm at Turner Jenness Funeral Home in Spirit Lake.
Margaret Jean Cravens was born July 21, 1921, in Des Moines, Iowa, the daughter of Robert Haywood and Margaret Cary (Hayne) Cary. Margaret was raised and educated in Des Moines, graduating from Roosevelt High School in 1939. Margaret then attended Francis Shimer College in Mount Carroll, Illinois and then Drake University in Des Moines.
Margaret was united in marriage to James W. Cravens on May 24, 1940. The couple made their home in Des Moines, Iowa, West Los Angeles, California and Sanborn, Iowa before moving to Spirit Lake, Iowa.
Margaret enjoyed playing bridge, traveling and flowers. She also enjoyed an active social life, and, above all, Margaret cherished time spent with her family.
Margaret passed away Friday, March 15, 2013, at Lakes Regional Healthcare in Spirit Lake, Iowa at ninety-one years of age
Margaret is survived by her husband of seventy-two years, James W. Cravens; children, Margaret "Mitzi" Porter and her husband Glenn, and James P. Cravens and his wife Marilyn; grandchildren, Phillip Porter, Kim Porter Hornibrook (John), Roxann Porter Hackbarth (Dave), Emilie Cravens (Jesse Tack) and Catherine Cravens (Ramon Soto); great-grandchildren, Hunter Porter, Megan Hackbarth, Alex Hackbarth Hawn (Nate), Glenn Hackbarth, Cole Hackbarth, Taylor Hackbarth, Sophie Hackbarth and Johnna Hornibrook; great-great grandchildren, Justine Hackbarth and Kiernan Hawn; family friend, Char Albert; nieces, nephews and many friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, a son, John H. Cravens on May 25, 1988, siblings, Virginia Cary Briggs (Ken), Mary Haywood Cary Larson (Jack) and Robert Haywood Cary.
A memorial fund has been established in memory of Margaret.
