Marie Barrett

Marie Barrett, 95, of Spirit Lake, died February 3, 2014. Services will be held at the Spirit Lake United Methodist Church at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 8, 2014. Visitation will be Friday February 7 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Turner Jenness Funeral Home in Spirit Lake. Memorials can be made to the Spirit Lake United Methodist Church. Marie Frances Barrett was born November 22, 1918, to W.F. (Bill) and Clara Pfeiffer Barrett. She was born in the family home in Spirit Lake, and lived there all her life. She graduated from Spirit Lake High School in 1937 with honors. She then went to work in the Dickinson County treasurer's office in October 1937 as a clerk. On January 1, 1938, she was appointed as the deputy county treasurer. Marie was elected as the Dickinson County Treasurer in 1962, and held that position until her retirement in 1998. She then worked for three years for the Dickinson County Museum. Marie was baptized and joined the Spirit Lake United Methodist Church at the age of 18. She taught Sunday School for 40 years, and was the chair or member of many church boards. Marie joined Rainbow for Girls when the chapter was organized. She then joined the Order of Eastern Star and served as an officer for several years. She is a lifetime member of OES. Her interests included reading, music, gardening, flowers, politics, volunteering, and visiting with friends and neighbors. She is survived by brother in law Robert Stanley; her nephew William F. Edmondson, his wife Debbie and children Jennifer and Amy of Ames, Iowa; her niece Barbara A. Edmondson of Washington, Iowa; her nephew David R. Stanley, his wife Lori and children Kyle and Kayla of Osage, Iowa; and niece Susan Morrison, husband Tim and children Jeremy and Ryan of Altoona, Iowa. She was preceded in death by her parents, her sisters Helen Jane Edmondson and Carolyn Billie Stanley, and her brother in law Rollin Clair "Ed" Edmondson.
