Mary Schmeling

Mary Coleen Schmeling was born October 24, 1930 in Terril, Iowa the daughter of Carl and Madalene (Gibbs) Johnson. She graduated from Terril High School in 1948. On October 31, 1948 Mary was united in marriage to Marvin Alvin Schmeling at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Terril, Iowa. Mary and Marvin farmed in rural Milford, Iowa before retiring and moving to Fostoria, Iowa in 1994. Due to health concerns, they moved to the Spirit Lake area with the last three and one-half years spent at Hilltop Care Center in Spirit Lake, Iowa. Mary was a member of the First English Lutheran Church in Spencer, Iowa, and past member of Westport Women's Club, and Concordia Lutheran Women's Group in Lake Park, Iowa. Mary's hobbies included gardening, cooking, baking, sewing and scrapbooking. Mary and Marvin loved having coffee guests and always had something home baked to go with it. Mary loved her family and loved to entertain them in their home for family meals, cards and games. Mary passed away at Hilltop Care Center in Spirit Lake, Iowa on June 2, 2012 at the age of 81 years . Survivors are her children, Craig (Carol) of Everly, Iowa, Laurie (Arnold) Bates of Milford, Iowa, Marilea (Frank) Phelps of Spencer, Iowa, Jane (Rod) Stevenson of Milford, Iowa, Mike (Bobbi) of Milford, Iowa and Mark (Sonja) of Brandon, South Dakota; nineteen grandchildren and twenty-three great-grandchildren; sister, Karen (Gary) Jackson of Dickens, Iowa; sisters-in-law, Genie Johnson of Idaho, Marge (Gary) Stoehr of Grundy Center, Iowa; Brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Virgil (Kathy) Schmeling of Moneta, Iowa, Leona (Maynard) Holtz of Everly, Iowa, Jerry (Karen) Schmeling of Burnsville, Minnesota and Lee (Alyce) Shatto of Spencer, Iowa. Mary was preceded in death by her husband, Marvin, who passed away April 27, 2012; daughter, Marla Jo Schmeling; grandson, Scotty Schmeling; parents, Carl and Madalene Johnson; brothers, Duane and Daryl Johnson; sister, Candace in infancy; brother-in-law and his wife Donald and Norma Schmeling; sister-in-laws, Stella Schmeling and Alice Shatto; parents-in-law, Art and Rosa Schmeling.
