Visitation will be held at Turner Jenness Funeral Home in Milford, IA on Friday April 21st from 5 to 7 including a Masonic service. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at Calvary United Methodist Church in Arnolds Park on Saturday April 22nd at 11:30 followed by a luncheon. Burial will be at Memory Gardens Cemetery in Spirit Lake. In lieu of flowers the family request memorials that will be used towards a commemorative at Calvary United Methodist Church in Nick's memory.
Nickolas John Vos, 91 was reunited with his late wife and love of his life Jennie on March 7, 2017. Nick was born on April 21, 1925 in Edgerton, Minnesota to Cecelia (Heidgerken) and John Vos. He was the oldest of 5 siblings. Nick joined the Army on January 31, 1946. He served as paratrooper in the 82st Airborne stationed in Fort Bragg, NC and was assigned as an automotive mechanic. Nick achieved the rank of Private First Class and was discharged on March 29, 1947 decorated with a World War 2 Victory Medal. He met Jennie Jesperson when he was discharged from the service and instantly fell in love. They married on January 31, 1949. The young couple lived in Walker, MN and later Milbank, SD and Huron SD. They moved to Brainerd, MN in 1951 where their daughter Vicki was born.
In 1954 they moved to Arnolds Park where son Gary and daughter Diane were born. Nick worked for Barnes Plumbing and Heating and eventually acquired the business changing the name to Vos Plumbing and Heating. Nick served as a security officer at the Roof Garden during the summers, was a volunteer fireman, a member of the Masons and American Legion, and also served on the Arnolds Park City Council. Nick and Jennie spent 29 winters in Mission, Texas where Nick volunteered in a colonial, built a church in Mexico and helped make their parks annual floats. Nick enjoyed tinkering on his lawn, attending sprint car races, keeping his vehicles spic and span, doing word search puzzles and making wood crafts. Nick will always be remembered for his sense of humor, the practical jokes he played on people and his generous heart. He was well respected and touched many lives. Nick loved spending time with family and friends. Nick was a devoted husband and took exceptional care of Jennie as her health failed, a true testament of his never ending love.
One of Nick's proudest moments was going on an Honor Flight to Washington DC. He was very proud of the American Flag and those that fought for our country.
Nick was a member of Calvary United Methodist Church in Arnolds Park.
He is survived by daughter Vicki (Les) Milverstedt of Hastings, MN; son Gary (Marilyn) Vos of Arnolds Park, IA; daughter Diane (Jeff) Haedt of Savage, MN; grandchildren Nick Sullivan, John Sullivan, Joe Gamble, Ryan Haedt, Anna Vos and Travis Haedt; great grandchildren Taylor Sullivan, Skylor Sullivan, Chandlyr Sullivan, Parker Sullivan, Sierra Sullivan, Andrew Sullivan, Megan Sullivan and Maddie Gamble; sister Nori Pool, sisters-in-law Sharon Jesperson and Ardy Vos; many nieces and nephews; and family friend Peggy (Dan) Williams of Boone, IA.
Nick is preceded in death by his wife Jennie, parents and siblings- Eileen, Doris, and George.
