Orval Brawner

September 17, 1936 — April 24, 2022

A visitation for Orval Brawner, 85, of Terril will be held Saturday, April 30, 2022 from 1:00-3:00 PM at Turner Jenness Funeral Home in Milford. A graveside service will be held Saturday at 3:30 PM at Lakeview Cemetery in Spirit Lake.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial be given to the American Diabetes Association, P.O. Box 7023 Merrifield, VA  22116-7023 or given to the family directly.

Orval Dean Brawner, the son of Earnest and Margaret (Hanson) Brawner, was born on September 17, 1936, in Everly, Iowa.

Growing up, Orval attended school at Gillette Grove and earned his high school diploma from Gillette Grove High School.

Orval worked on the family farm before enlisting in the United States Army on November 17, 1959. During his time of service, Orval earned a rank of SP4 (E-4) and the Good Conduct Medal. He was honorably discharged on November 30, 1965.

On November 29, 1959, Orval was united in marriage to Karen Jensen at the Little Sioux Lutheran Church.

Orval worked at GNB battery factory for many years before they closed down. He was working as a stockman at the same Walmart where his wife worked in Leavenworth. They retired in 2003 and moved to Terril, Iowa. He could talk with anyone as if he had known them for years. He was known to his children as Pop. To his many friends he was Orv or Orvie.

In his free time, Orval enjoyed golfing, bowling, fishing, and playing cards with his family and friends. Family gatherings involved several hours of playing Cribbage.

Orval passed on April 24, 2022 in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

Those left to cherish his memory include his children: Terra Chapman of Kentucky; Brian (Pam) Brawner of Leavenworth, Kansas; Shelley Brawner of Terril, Iowa; Carrie (Scott) Cottrell of Grinnell, Iowa; sister, Jan Jacobson; brothers: Gary, Leslie (Les), and Harold (Joyce) Brawner; grandchildren: Michael Haskins, Christopher (Kasey) Reed, Jessie (Jeramie) Greathouse, Joshua Schuler, Brandon Brawner, Kristin Metz, Kathryn Metz; seven great-grandchildren and one great-great granddaughter; extended family and friends.

Orval was preceded in death by his wife, Karen Brawner; parents, Earnest and Margaret Brawner; sister and brother-in-law, Marlene and Arnold Dodge; brother and sister-in-law, Darrel and Ardyce Brawner; brother-in-law, Dean Jacobson; and sister-in-law, Claire Brawner.
