A funeral service for Oscar Nordblad, age 88, of Milford, will be held Wednesday, March 26, 2014 at 2:00pm at Union Memorial Church in Milford. Burial will be at Milford Cemetery with Military Graveside Rites by Milford American Legion Post 384. Visitation will be on Tuesday, March 25th after 5:00pm with the family present from 5:00pm -7:00pm at Turner Jenness Funeral Home in Milford.
Oscar Carl Nordblad, son of Nanna (Hansen) and Carl Nordblad, was born May 21, 1925 in Ruthven, Iowa. Oscar enlisted in the United States Navy on October 13, 1942, serving on the U.S.S. Wainwright DD419. He was honorably discharged in 1946.
On August 29, 1954 Oscar married Barbara Hunt, the first couple to be married in the new Union Memorial Church in Milford. The couple lived in Renton, Washington and Ruthven before moving to Milford in 1961. Oscar worked for 25 years at John Morrell Packing Co in Estherville, Iowa.
Oscar was a life member of Legion Post 384 in Milford and the VFW of Estherville. He was an Assistant Scout Master for Milford Boy Scout Troop 170 for many years. He was interested in WWII history, local history and family lineage. He enjoyed spending time with his family, at the farm mowing, going to coffee, and driving around in his truck nicknamed the Wainwright. Back in his earlier days he enjoyed motorcycle hill climbing.
Oscar passed away March 22, 2014 at Hilltop Care Center in Spirit Lake at eighty-eight years of age.
He is survived by his wife Barbara; children Monie Nordblad, Carlo (Paula) Nordblad, and Denise Kastner; Grandchildren Bryce Nordblad, Ryan (Megan) Kastner, Wyatt (Melissa) Kastner, Kendra Kastner, and Jenna Johnson; dog Candice; sister Helen Phillips; sister-in-law Viola Nordblad; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers Irvin and Art; and three brothers-in-law.
