Robert (Bob) Lyle Smith was born January 13, 1933 in Churdan, Iowa to Verle and Ruby (Shriver) Smith. He graduated from Scranton High School in Scranton, Iowa in 1952. Robert joined the U.S. Army on July 9, 1953 and was honorably discharged on June 4, 1955. He attended the U.S. Army Engineer School where he earned the National Defense Service Medal and Good Conduct Medal.
He married Gertrude Fay Thomas on December 26, 1954 in Scranton, Iowa. After two years they moved to the Fort Dodge area and in 1974 moved to the Lakes area. For the last sixteen years they enjoyed wintering in Aranass Pass, Texas.
Robert drove truck for many years and was also a restaurant owner. His last trucking jobs were with Sathers and Ruan. Robert was active in the Methodist Church. His interests included boating (2-Boat Bob), fishing and used car shopping.
Robert passed away November 5, 2011 at the Milford Nursing Home in Milford, Iowa at the age of seventy-eight years.
He is survived by his wife Gertrude; daughters, Julia Hoscheid of Truman, Minnesota, Laura (Kelvin) Heinrichs of Bradenton, Florida; son, Stephen Smith of Spencer, Iowa; eight grandchildren and twenty great-grandchildren; sister, Gloria (LeRoy) Fick of Pleasant Hill, Iowa; brother, Ronald (Tina) Smith of Des Moines, Iowa.
He was preceded in death by his parents; twin infant sisters; brother, Bill Smith; son-in-law, Mark Hoscheid and two great-grandchildren, Riley Dahlberg and Shane Terry.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be given to the Parkinsons Research Foundation or Lakes Regional Hospice.
