A funeral service will be held Friday, January 17th at 10:30am at the First Presbyterian Church in Spirit Lake. Visitation will begin one hour prior to the service at the church. Mrs. Ziegenbusch passed away Sunday, January 12th at Hilltop Care Center. Interment will be at 2 pm Friday at Oak Hill Cemetery in Cherokee, Iowa.
A memorial fund has been established in Shirley's name.
Shirley Jean Ziegenbusch was born April 4, 1925 in Raymond, South Dakota, the daughter of Thomas and Agness (Marshall) Dawson. Upon graduation from Perry High School in Perry, Iowa, she attended Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa.
Shirley was united in marriage to James Ziegenbusch on June 23, 1946 in Cherokee, Iowa. The couple made their home in Cherokee where they raised their family. They moved to Marshalltown, Iowa in 1970.
Shirley was a member at First Presbyterian Church, first in Cherokee, and later in Marshalltown. She was active as a Sunday School Teacher, serving on several church circles and the Presbyterian Women Board. Additionally, she served as a Deacon in both Cherokee and Marshalltown, and an Elder in Marshalltown.
Shirley worked as the Deputy City Clerk in Cherokee and Marshalltown. Community involvement was important to her as she was active in Eastern Star, serving as Worthy Matron of Carnation Chapter, served as President of both the Twentieth Century Club and Tu Larcul Club in Marshalltown and was active in the Garden Club in Cherokee. She enjoyed cooking, reading traveling, knitting and playing bridge. Above all, however, she loved to spend time with her family.
Shirley passed away Sunday, January 12, 2014, at Hilltop Care Center in Spirit Lake, surrounded by family, at eighty-eight years of age.
She is survived by her husband of sixty-seven years, James Ziegenbusch of Spirit Lake; son, John (Sue) Ziegenbusch of Spirit Lake; grandchildren, Amy (Larry, Jr.) Webber of Spirit Lake, Betsy (Andrew) Mudd and Justin Bohm; great-grandchildren, Katherine, Hayden and Laurel Webber; and son-in-law, Robert Bohm.
Shirley was preceded in death by her parents, Agness and Thomas Dawson, an infant brother, Duaine Dawson, and daughter, Joani Ziegenbusch Bohm.
