Stanley Jon Miller, a beloved member of the Spirit Lake, IA community and dedicated servant to his country and fellow citizens, passed away at his residence on August 15, 2024, at the age of 88. Stan was born to Danish immigrants, John and Threna(Nielsen) Miller, on June 13, 1936, in Hamilton County, IA. Stan graduated from Jordan High School and pursued higher education at Iowa State College, graduating in 1958. His commitment to his alma mater runs strong and never wavered, even throughout his final days. Stan’s love of attending and rooting for Iowa State has been passed down to his children and grandchildren. Go Cyclones!
Born and raised in Iowa, Stan proudly served in the Iowa National Guard, embodying the commitment and dedication that defined his life. Following his military service, he embarked on a successful career as a claims manager for General Casualty Insurance, where his expertise and integrity were deeply respected. Stan's contributions extended far beyond his professional life. He was a committed volunteer and leader in the community, generously dedicating his time and energy to causes close to his heart. He served as a member of the S.A.L.T. (Seniors and Law Enforcement Together) program, where he worked tirelessly to foster stronger community connections and promote safety. His leadership was further evident in his roles as a church youth club leader, councilman, and mayor of Clive, where he was known for his unwavering dedication to improving the lives of those around him. In addition to his civic duties, Stan had a passion for sports, spending many years refereeing basketball and football games, reflecting his commitment to integrity and sportsmanship.
In 1956, Stan married Janet Tripp, the love of his life and his steadfast partner in all his endeavors. Her unwavering support was instrumental to his many accomplishments. Together, they raised two wonderful children, Timothy and Mary. Family was at the heart of Stan’s life; he took immense pride in his children and grandchildren’s achievements, and found great delight in his great-grandchildren. In their later years, Stan and Jan enjoyed their winters in Sun Lakes, AZ. Stan also relished fishing trips with friends and family, where he could share his sense of adventure. In addition to family, Stan had a passion for woodworking and construction projects. As a skilled craftsman, he found joy and fulfillment in creating cherished pieces for his family, leaving behind a lasting legacy of his artistry and affection.
Those left to cherish his extraordinary memory include his beloved wife, Jan; children, Tim (Wanda) and Mary (Don Diehl); grandchildren, Kyle (Karli), Jon (Tabetha), Abigail (Alex), and Paul (Katelyn); great-grandchildren, Everstan, Jaxstan, and Lane; sister, Shirley (Marvin Davis); as well as special cousins, nieces and nephews.
Stan’s unwavering commitment to his community and his genuine care for others will be deeply missed, but fondly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him. He leaves behind a legacy of service and community spirit that will continue to inspire those who knew him. A celebration of Stan’s life will be held on August 21st at First Presbyterian Church, 3501 Hill Ave, Spirit Lake, IA. Visitation at 10:00 am and services at 11:00 am with a reception to follow.
