Thomas Spellman

A Mass of Christian Burial for Tom Spellman, 82, of Okoboji will be held Friday, January 10, 2025 at 10:30 AM at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Milford.

Thomas Joseph Spellman, the son of Thomas J. Spellman and Anne Spellman was born August 10, 1942 in New York City, NY. After high school, Tom was enlisted in the United States Army in 1960 and worked in military police until his honorable discharge in 1962. He later attended Manhattan College in New York. 

On October 29, 1966, Tom was united in marriage to June E. Spellman in New York City and they enjoyed fifty-eight years of marriage. The couple lived in Libertyville, Illinois for a time before moving to Okoboji, Iowa in 2018. They attended St. Joseph Catholic Church in Milford.

Sports were a significant interest, college basketball being the favorite. Tom never stopped loving the New York Giants and even worked at the Yankee Stadium in his younger years. His interest in horse racing was a fun hobby, win or lose. He was an avid reader, loving the Wall Street Journal and most books. He was able to retain so much of what he read. Tom was passionate about working so much that he didn’t want to retire. He enjoyed cooking and June reaped the benefits of it. Tom missed the ocean, but the lakes still gave him pleasure. The greatest part of his life, and the reason for moving to Iowa, was his grandchildren and attending their events regularly. 

Tom passed away January 3, 2025, in Okoboji, Iowa at eighty-two years of age.

He is survived by his wife, June Spellman; daughters, Kimberly (Kevin) Hawn and Kelly (Stacy) Olson; grandchildren, Nicholas Hawn, Madelyn, Owen, Ana and Addison Olson; sister, Nancy Spellman Murtha and her son, Brian; sister, Noreen (Bobby) O'Brien and their children, Christopher and Courtney. 

Tom was preceded in death by his father, Thomas Spellman; mother, Anne Spellman and one brother, Gerald Spellman.
