Twylla Ruth Gregory Lloyd was born near Lake Park, Iowa on January 26, 1924 to Stanley P. Gregory and Iva Margaret Miller Gregory. Following her 1941 high school graduation from Excelsior School she attended Iowa State Teachers College (now Northern Iowa University). She received a one-year teacher's certification typical of World War II emergency circumstances and taught at a one-room school house in Lakeville Township, Dickinson County before marrying Glea Henry Lloyd of Milford, Iowa on May 7, 1943. To this 70-year union five children were born: Martha, Robert, Larry, Mark, and Mary. Together Glea and Twylla engaged in farming and raising purebred Guernsey cattle, first near Terrill, Iowa then on a farm east of Spirit Lake. Their Mar-La-Bob Guernsey cattle were the source of much pride and a great deal of family involvement until 1969. In 1969 Glea and Twylla discontinued farming and assumed new responsibilities with the Spirit Lake School System when they moved from the farm into Spirit Lake. Twylla, as Director of Food Service, is remembered for her careful and creative management of school hot lunches. With her husband, Twylla was recognized in 2012 with induction in the Spirit Lake Education Hall of Achievement. Twylla spent numerous summers in food service responsibilities for church camps and Okoboji Summer Theater. Twylla played an active role in her church: first as church pianist and choir member of the Terrill United Methodist Church and then as a member of Spirit Lake United Methodist Church where she taught Sunday School and participated for many years in United Methodist Women activities. Twylla held many offices in the Order of Eastern Star including Worthy Matron while Glea served as Worth Patron.
