Verlyn Duane Marcks

Verlyn Duane Marcks was born to Lyle William and Bessie Lauretta (Wilson) Marcks at Milford, Iowa on January 6, 1931. He graduated from Milford High School and attended N.E. Missouri State College for two years. Bernie served in the Air Force during the Korean Conflict. On September 2, 1977 he married Karen J. "Kay" Bailey at Council Bluffs, Iowa where they raised their family. Together as foster parents Bernie and Kay provided a home to more than 200 children over an 18 year period that needed a family environment. In 1998 the couple moved to Milford. Bernie was an individual who loved life and his family foremost. He had to be busy doing something all the time. Bernie enjoyed working with his hands and building anything. He loved to grow roses and liked to fish. Mr. Marcks passed away Tuesday, March 24, 2009 in Sioux Falls following complications of a stroke. He was 78 years old. Verlyn was a member of the Union Memorial Church and American Legion. He enjoyed following college sports and liked to read. Left to cherish his memory is his wife Karen "Kay" Marcks of Milford, son Jeff (Kris) Marcks of Waterloo, IA, two daughters, Denise Johnson of Spirit Lake, IA and Michelle (Brian) Glasz of DeWitt, IA, seven grandsons, Scott (Lindsay) Johnson, , Sean Johnson, Derrek Henscheid, Alex Henscheid, Aaron Henscheid, Gavin Glasz and Carter Marcks. Survivors also include one sister, Judy (Gayle) Harrison of Holstein, IA, two aunts, cousins, a niece & nephew and numerous foster children. He was preceded in death by his parents, father in law, Floyd "Bob" Bailey and son-in-law, Craig Johnson.
