A Celebration of Life for Verna Mugge, will be held on October 17 at Grace Lutheran Church, in Spirit Lake, IA. Visitation will be at 10:00 am with services to follow at 11:00. Internment will be at Liberty Cemetery near Calumet.
Verna Mae (Matz) Mugge was born in Hartford, SD, on January 17, 1924. She attended school there until the 5th grade when her family moved to Iowa. She attended rural grade schools near Sutherland and graduated from Sutherland High School in 1941. In 1943, she married Dalton Mugge and they lived on farms near Calumet and Sutherland until 1969, when they moved to Aurelia. In 1987, Dalton and Verna moved to Okoboji, where in her retirement years she enjoyed golfing, walking, and swimming. Finally, in 2018, they moved to Minneapolis.
Verna passed away on October 12, 2019, at Augustana Care Center in Minneapolis. At the time of her death she and Dalton had been married 76 years. While Verna had occasionally been employed for short periods outside the home, her primary calling was always to her family. She was preceeded in death by her daughter, Julaine, in 1959; as well as her parents, Hans and Alma Matz; 2 sisters, Leona and Bernice and 2 brothers, Alvin and Ray.
In addition to her husband, Dalton, she is survived by a sister, Arlene Selk of Aurora, CO; 3 children, Joel Mugge of Palm Springs, CA, Janelle Valentini of Bemidji, MN, and Jay Mugge of Armstrong, IA; 4 grandchildren, and 5 great-grandchildren.
