Funeral services for Viola Place, 97, of Correctionville, Iowa and formerly of Milford, will be held at 10:30 am, Saturday, August 10, 2019, at Faith Community Church in Milford. Interment will be at Okoboji Cemetery in Arnolds Park.
Visitation will begin at 5 pm Friday, August 9, 2019, with the family present from 5-7 pm at Turner Jenness Funeral Home in Milford.
Viola Lavonne Nebben Place was born to John and Myrtle (Moore) Nebben on a farm near Colman, South Dakota on March 23, 1922.
Viola graduated from Flandreau, South Dakota high school in 1940. She furthered her education at Eastern State Teachers College (Dakota State University) and Iowa State Teachers College (UNI). She taught four years in rural schools of South Dakota and Iowa.
Then she taught two years at the former Okoboji Township Consolidated School near Milford. At this time she met her future husband, Lester Place. They were married December 2, 1945 at her parent's home in Rock Valley, Iowa. They lived in the Milford, Iowa area the rest of their lives together. Lester passed away on July 17, 1997. Viola worked for many years as a bookkeeper in the area, including Les' D-X.
She was a member of Union Memorial Church (now Faith Community Church) and worked in many areas through the years there. Viola enjoyed being a volunteer, besides gardening, canning and genealogy. Most of all she enjoyed her family and friends.
In August of 2014 she moved to Correctionville Specialty Care in Correctionville, Iowa to be near some of her family. She passed away there in her sleep the morning of August 3, 2019.
Surviving are her daughters, Edie Orris of Moville, Iowa and Ruthie Kastrup of San Antonio, Texas; a son, Alan Place of Homestead, Florida. Grandchildren, Margo Orris (Dave) Leisinger, Jeremy Orris, Michael (Carol) Orris, Sr., Lori Ann Kastrup (David) Ray, Amy Place Law, Dream Weaver (Orris) and granddaughter-in-law, Kristy Place. Also surviving are great-grandchildren, Cate Orris (Nate) Hoepner, Harmoni Orris (Brett) Sudgen, Gabrielle Orris, Elisabeth Orris, Rayne Orris, Moon Lund, Michael Orris, Jr., Aarow Orris, Zeke Place, Logan Orris, Aidan Weaver, Joshua Weaver, Tyler Weaver plus 6 great-great-grandchildren and special friend, Vangie Cowan.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, her brothers, Laurel, Wayne (Hermina), Loren (Doris), her sister, Jean (Pier) Wynia; sisters-in-law, Marylee (Glen) Taylor, Lorene (Andy) Hoffman; grandson, Ben Place; son-in-law, Paul Orris, a great-grandchild and a great-great-grandchild.
