Obituary of Mabel Anna Wilson

Mabel Anna Wilson, 103, of Spirit Lake, passed away April 30, 2009 at Hilltop Care Center in Spirit Lake. She was born on January 19, 1906 in Mc Clouth, Kansas to Clark and Anna (Wright) Albro. Mabel attended Arnolds Park High School. On November 4, 1923, Mabel was united in marriage to Harry "Zeke" Wilson in Milford, Iowa. To this marriage, two daughters and a son were born. She was a member of Calvary United Methodist Church in Arnolds Park. She also belonged to United Methodist Women, Martha Circle and the Okoboji Cemetery Society. Mabel valued friends and family throughout her long live. She always knew how to have fun, share her love and enjoy life. She provided a home rich with love for her three children, her grandchildren, her great grandchildren, and her great-great grandchildren. She was always ready to go dancing, play cards, play Sorry, go fishing, cook family dinners, pull out the toy box and bake cinnamon rolls. She baked cinnamon rolls for family, friends, church events and bake sales. Anyone who knew Mabel, knew her cinnamon rolls. Mabel was very creative making Christmas decorations inside and out, making shell pictures, crocheting and writing poems. She devoted her life to her family, but surrounded herself with women friends, too. She belonged to the "Merry 16 Club" which was a group of 16 women who got together for many years. They were responsible for starting the Arnolds Park All School Reunion. She belonged to a Birthday Club, where they went out for breakfast once a week. She also belonged to a Pinochle Club, which she was still playing with into her 90's. A highlight of Mabel's was her first and only flight on an airplane at the age of 93, when she flew to Austin, Texas to be at her great granddaughter, Tara's wedding. Mabel was very independent and only at the age of 102, moved into Wel Life from the Sunrise Apartments in Spirit Lake. Before this, she lived in Arnolds Park and Okoboji, close to the lakes that were very much a part of her and Zeke's life together. She was only at the Hilltop Care Center for the last five weeks of her life. Mabel is survived by two daughters, Doyne Hummel of Spirit Lake, and Dorothy Ewen of Arnolds Park; son, Ed Wilson & friend Larry Garth of Spirit Lake; grandchildren, Susie (Ewen) Tuel and husband Jim of Spirit Lake; Candy (Hummel) Mayer and husband Charlie of El Paso, Texas; Kirk Ewen and wife Virginia of Arnolds Park, Shelley (Hummel) Dosman and husband Phil of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Cindy (Ewen) Konzen of Calabasas, California, Tim Wilson and wife Carol of Arnolds Park and Kirk Wilson and wife Chris of Sergeant Bluffs, Iowa.
