Obituary of Richard Jensen

Richard Alfred "Dick" Jensen was born in Graettinger, Iowa on November 9, 1927 to Leona (Mason) and Alfred Jensen. The family moved to Burt, Iowa in 1928 and then to Lake Park, Iowa in 1932. Dick attended Lake Park schools, graduating in 1945. He joined the Navy in 1945 and was honorably discharged in 1946. Dick returned to Lake Park where he worked for his dad in the hardware business. He took over ownership and operated Jensen's Hardware & Furniture until he sold out and retired in 1990. Dick married his sweetheart Joyce Wunder on September 5, 1948 and they made their home in Lake Park. Together they raised five children: Jack, Allan, Colin, Roxann, and Carol. Dick was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church of Lake Park and served in many roles. He was a member of the American Legion and a past member of the Lake Park Chamber of Commerce, Lions Club, bowling & golf leagues and a volunteer firefighter for over twenty years. He enjoyed traveling (especially to Florida), taking bus trips, watching sports on TV, attending baseball games, watching deer and other wildlife, visiting his kids, telling jokes, playing cards, and being social. Dick suffered injuries in a car accident on October 19 and died at Avera-McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls, South Dakota on Sunday, October 21, 2007. He is survived by his sons, Jack (Patty) Jensen, Ft Collins, Colorado; Allan Jensen, Westminster, Colorado; Colin (Mary Jo) Jensen, Sibley, Iowa; daughters, Roxann (Jeff) Newell, Mason City, Iowa and Carol Jensen, Eden Prairie, Minnesota; sisters: Shirley Johnstone, Spencer, Iowa & Maxine (Melvin) Yager, Bradenton, Florida; grandchildren, Angela (Patrick) Doman, Apple Valley, Minnesota, Ben, Tyler and Kayla Newell, Mason City, Iowa and Curt Jensen, Ft Collins, Colorado; granddaughter-in-law, Jamie Jensen, Ashton, Iowa and great-grandchildren, Mitchell, Bayleigh and Hunter Jensen, Ashton, Iowa, Avery Doman, Apple Valley, Minnesota; other family and many friends. He is preceded in death by his parents, his wife Joyce on February 26, 2000, and his grandson Michael Jensen February 20, 2005.
