Obituary of Marvin Mowery

Marvin Warren Mowery was born on December 29, 1939 in Milford, Iowa, to Oscar (Whitey) Warren Mowery and Frances Mahalia (Jensen) Mowery. The family moved to Chicago in 1940 where his father worked for a welding company as a master welder building tanks for WW II. When the war was over they moved back to the area where Marvin attended Arnolds Park School thru the 5th grade. In 1946 his only sibling, Kenneth Mowery, arrived. The family then moved to Omaha, NE in 1950 where Marvin attended grade school but then moved to Council Bluffs, Iowa and attended Thomas Jefferson High School where he graduated in 1957, graduating 12th out of 250 students. He was very proud of that and oh boy did us as kids growing up hear that a lot. Two weeks after graduating, Marvin joined the Navy where he served 3.5 years. He did his basic training at Great Lakes Basic Training in Chicago, Illinois. Marvin then went to Radioman's School in Bainbridge Maryland and then was assigned to the USS Ozbourn where he did two West Pac Cruises and got to see a lot of the world. When he was discharged from the service Marvin's rank was 2nd class radioman. In 1959, he married Joann Forman. Thru that marriage came five children, Michael Allan Mowery of Spencer, IA, Steven Warren Mowery (deceased), Lynda Marie Mowery (Rademacher) of Lakefield, MN, Gregory Warren Mowery of Spencer and Timothy Jo Mowery of Milford. When Marvin left the service he then became employed by JB Electronics in Council Bluffs, IA for approximately seven years. He then decided to move his family to Walthill, NE where he was employed by Huntel Telephone Systems as Central Office Tech. for N.E. Nebraska. While living in Walthill he was also Captain of the Fire and Rescue Department. In 1977 he then moved his family back to the Lakes area where he and his wife (Joann) bought the Blue Note Lounge until he sold it in 1983. Marvin then became an entrepreneur for a few years owning a ceramic shop and a card shop. In 1989 he married Angie Henderson and became a stepfather to Michelle, Vickie and Frances. Shortly after that he became employed by Wal-Mart as the Department Manager of Electronics until he retired at the age of 65. Marvin was diagnosed with MDS (Myelodisplaysia Syndrome) which is a pre-cancer to leukemia on December 29th (his birthday), 2011. He was taking regular treatments for this and had it under control. On February 27th, he was rushed to Lakes Regional Healthcare where he underwent emergency surgery for a perforated bowel. He then was life flighted to Sanford Hospital in Sioux Falls and on March 7th, he was put in Dougherty Hospice House where he passed away at 3:30am on March 11th, 2013. He leaves behind his wife of 24 years, Angie Mowery, 4 children, 3 step-daughters, one brother, twenty-one grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren, three nieces, one nephew and his dog, Rusty. He was preceded in death by his son, Steven and his parents, Oscar and Frances. Blessed be the memory of Marvin Warren Mowery.
