Obituary of Donald "Red" Newbrough

A memorial service for Donald "Red" Newbrough, age 92 of Lake Park, will be held at 10:30 am, Monday, October 23, 2023, at First Presbyterian Church in Lake Park.  Visitation will begin one hour prior to service time at the church.

Interment will be at Silver Lake Cemetery in Lake Park.

Donald Ray Newbrough, a devoted husband, father, grandfather and respected community member, passed away on October 19, 2023, at Lakes Regional Healthcare in Spirit Lake, Iowa at the age of 92.

Born on April 24, 1931, in Milford, Iowa, Don was the son of Earl and Louise (Struchen) Newbrough. He spent his early years in Milford where he graduated from Milford High School. After Don attended Radio Repair School in Chicago, he enlisted in the Navy in 1951, achieving the rank of Radioman 2nd class. After his honorable discharge in November 1955, Don moved to Omaha where he continued his education in TV Repair. 

Don married the love of his life, Dorothy Jean Johnson Newbrough, in Spirit Lake, Iowa on July 26, 1958. He had worked for Battenn Radio and TV in Storm Lake before opening Reds Radio and TV in Lake Park which he owned and operated for many years. He later worked for Lake Park Utilities.

Don was an active member of the Presbyterian Church in Lake Park and demonstrated his unwavering commitment to his country by being a 50-year member of the American Legion. His dedication extended to the Lake Park Fire Department, where he served for twenty-three years, including twelve years as Chief.

In his leisure time, Don enjoyed various activities, such as fishing, bowling, woodworking and cheering for the Hawkeyes. One of his greatest joys was taking Dorothy for leisurely rides in the golf cart.

Don is survived by his children, Connie Clark (Andy) and RoeMayne "Butch" Griffel (Diane); his sister, Judy Smith (Jim); seven grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren. His legacy lives on through the many lives he touched and the values he instilled in his family.

Don was preceded in death by his parents; his beloved wife, Dorothy; his son Randy Griffel and his brother Daryl Newbrough.
