Obituary of Neil Belken

Celebration of Life for Neil Belken, age 47, of Ocheyedan will be held on Wednesday, December 13, 2023 from 2:00-4:00pm at the Turner Jenness Funeral Home in Spirit Lake. A Time of Remembrance will take place at 4:00pm at the funeral home.

Neil Robert Belken, the son of Dennis and Leanna (Kramer) Belken, entered this world on April 28, 1976, in Spirit Lake, Iowa. On December 6, 2023, Neil passed away at his home.

During his early years, Neil found joy on the shores of Center Lake, where he spent countless hours catching fish and almost getting drug into the lake. His adventurous spirit extended to the three-wheeler rides around the yard, and he shared fond moments with his brother, Jason, as they rode hot wheels and swung on the tire swing at the family home.

In high school, Neil showcased his musical talents by playing the trombone in the Spirit Lake High School band. His passion for music also led him to achieve making All State in the Spirit Lake Choir for three consecutive years. An avid fisherman, Neil continued to enjoy this pastime with his son, Gavin.

Neil's interests expanded into programming for CNC, and he enjoyed traveling to Sturgis with his father, Dennis. The simple joy of sitting on the porch swing with his brother, Jason, and watching storms roll in became a cherished tradition. During his time in Spirit Lake, Neil loved running the trails around the lakes and dedicated himself to serving the community as a member of the volunteer fire department in Okoboji, particularly finding fulfillment in his work with the underwater search and rescue team.

Throughout his life, Neil called various places home, including Center Lake, Spirit Lake, Sioux Falls, Ocheyedan, and Milford.

Those left to cherish his memory include his son, Gavin Kade Belken; his brother, Jason Belken; his parents, Dennis and Leanna Belken; and a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends.

Neil was preceded in death by his grandparents, Duane and Charlene Belken, as well as John and Helen Kramer.
