Obituary of Alice Hummel

Alice Hummel was born September 8, 1912 in Midland City, Illinois, the daughter of George and Susy (Mathews) Landrith. She received her education in Clinton, Illinois. She came to Jackson, Minnesota where she attended Normal Training Class. She taught rural school for two years before her marriage. On January 28, 1932, she was united in marriage to John F. Hummel in Alpha, Minnesota. The couple lived in Des Moines Township and Middletown Township before moving to Jackson in 1971. Five children were born to this union. She graduated from Mankato State University in 1972. She taught in rural schools, Dunnell and Sherburn for twenty-seven years before retiring in 1978. She was affiliated with the Martin County Retired Teachers Association and Jackson County University Women. In February 3, 2007, she joined the DAR (Daughters of American Revolution). She was an active member of the Grace Lutheran Church in Spirit Lake. Alice passed away March 16, 2011 at Hilltop Care Center in Spirit Lake, Iowa at ninety-eight years of age. She is survived by three daughters and one son; Karen (Kay) Schuneman of Spirit Lake, Iowa, Pat Mueller of Spirit Lake, Barb Christianson of Bode, Iowa, Dennis Hummel of Sartel, Minnesota; one sister-in-law, Dorothy Parsons of Redwood Falls, Minnesota; seventeen grandchildren; thirty-nine great-grandchildren; many great-great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters; two brothers; her husband, John; her oldest daughter, Avis Eggers; two sons-in-law, Charles Eggers and Jim Schuneman.
