Obituary of Peter Hegeman

Peter Hegeman was born December 13, 1950 in Noordwijk, Netherlands, the son of Henry and Helen (Van Diggelen) Hegeman. He received his degree in Public Administration from Northwestern College in Orange City, Iowa. After graduation, Pete worked as a Field Auditor with the State of Iowa, a City Clerk in Estherville, Iowa and a Deputy City Clerk in Hawarden, Iowa. On July 6, 1978, Pete was united in marriage to Mary-Ann Van Noord in Chatham, Ontario, Canada. They moved to Spirit Lake, Iowa in 1978 where Pete was the Spirit Lake City Administrator until his retirement in 2006. Pete and Mary-Ann were blessed with four children, Maggie, Meredith, Philip and Joel. Pete was a member of the Good News Community Church. Prior to his retirement he was also a member of the Northwest Iowa City Managers Assoc., Kiwanis Club, Spirit Lake Mainsail, Chamber of Commerce, Iowa Municipal Finance Assoc., Northwest Iowa Risk Management Assoc. and the Iowa League of Cities. Pete loved spending time with his family. He enjoyed weekend trips to visit his children, family vacations and trips to Canada. He enjoyed biking, golfing with his family, riding his motorcycle and giving rides. Grandpa Pete loved playing with his grandson, Miles. He also enjoyed going out for dinner and a movie with his wife, Mary-Ann. He was a fan of all Iowa team sports and loved to watch the Spirit Lake Indians teams and the marching band. Pete enjoyed giving family visitors narrative tours of the Lakes area and was Snowball's #1 companion. Pete passed away September 8, 2011 in Spirit Lake, Iowa at sixty years of age. He is survived by his wife, Mary-Ann; children, Maggie Miller (Joshua), Meredith Tatman (Joshua), Philip Hegeman and Joel Hegeman; grandchild, Miles Miller; dog, Snowball; sisters, Wilma Resoort (Gysbert), Joan Rutka and Christine Schnabel (Delmar); brothers, Wynand Hegeman (Loretta), John Hegeman (Ethel) and Case Hegeman. He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Helen Hegeman.
